IELTS Preparation Guide: Exam Pattern, Tips, and Resources

    Sproutern Career Team2026-01-0512 min read

Complete guide for IELTS Academic and General Training. Understand the 4 bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and tips to score 8+ Band.

IELTS Preparation Guide: Exam Pattern, Tips, and Resources

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most popular English proficiency test. Whether you want to study in Canada/UK/Australia (Academic) or migrate for work (General Training), a high IELTS band is crucial.

Scoring a Band 7, 8, or 9 isn't just about knowing English; it's about understanding the format of the test.

    Academic vs. General Training

    • Academic Module: For students applying to universities.
      • Difference: Reading & Writing sections are academic/scientific.
    • General Training (GT): For work visas and immigration (PR).
      • Difference: Reading & Writing sections focus on social/workplace situations.

Listening and Speaking sections are the SAME for both.

The 4 Sections: Breakdown & Tips

    1. Listening (30 Minutes + 10 mins transfer time)

    • Format: 4 Recordings (Monologue, Conversation in social context, Conversation in educational context, Academic lecture).
    • The Trap: The recording is played ONLY ONCE.
    • Tip: Read the questions before the recording starts. Predict the answers (is it a number? a name? a date?).
    • Spelling: Spelling mistakes count as wrong answers.

    2. Reading (60 Minutes)

    • Format: 3 Passages, 40 Questions.
    • Academic Tip: Texts are dense. Do NOT read every word. Use Skimming (for main idea) and Scanning (for keywords).
    • General Tip: First section is survival English (ads, notices); last section is a long text. Manage time: 15-20-25 mins structure.
    • True/False/Not Given: The most confusing type.
      • True: Matches text.
      • False: Contradicts text.
      • Not Given: Info is missing (don't assume!).

    3. Writing (60 Minutes)

    • Task 1 (Academic): Describe a graph/chart (150 words).
      • Tip: Don't give opinions. Just report the data trends. "Overall, sales increased..."
    • Task 1 (General): Write a letter (Formal/Semi-formal/Informal).
      • Tip: Tone matters. "Dear Sir" (Formal) vs "Hi John" (Informal).
    • Task 2 (Both): Essay (250 words).
      • Structure: Intro (Paraphrase prompt + Thesis) -> Body Para 1 -> Body Para 2 -> Conclusion.
      • Tip: Use linking words (However, Therefore, Furthermore) to boost Coherence score.

    4. Speaking (11-14 Minutes)

    • Format: Face-to-face interview.
      • Part 1: Intro & General questions (Home, Hobbies).
      • Part 2: Cue Card (Speak for 2 mins on a topic).
      • Part 3: Discussion (Abstract questions related to Part 2).
    • Tip: Do not memorize answers. Keep talking. Fluency > Vocabulary. If you make a mistake, correct it quickly and move on.

    Scoring: The Band System (0-9)

    • Band 9: Expert User.
    • Band 8: Very Good User.
    • Band 7: Good User (Standard requirement for top universities).
    • Band 6: Competent User.

Note: For Canada PR (Express Entry), you typically need CLB 9 (Listening 8, Reading 7, Writing 7, Speaking 7).

    Preparation Plan (4 Weeks)

    Week 1: Familiarization

    • Take a diagnostic mock test. See where you stand.
    • Understand the question types (MCQ, Matching headings, Map labelling).

    Week 2: Listening & Reading

    • Practice 1 Reading/Listening test daily.
    • Watch English movies/Podcasts (BBC Learning English) without subtitles.

    Week 3: Writing & Speaking

    • Write 1 essay daily. Use Grammarly to check errors, but get a human to check structure.
    • Record yourself speaking on cue card topics. Listen to your pauses and "umms."

    Week 4: Full Mocks

    • Simulate exam conditions. No breaks between Listening-Reading-Writing.
    • Build stamina.

    Resources

    1. Cambridge IELTS Books (1-18): The official past papers. The Bible of preparation.
    2. IELTS Liz (Website/YouTube): Excellent free tips.
    3. British Council / IDP: Official practice materials.

    Key Takeaways

    1. Time Management: In Reading, if stuck on a question for >1 min, skip it.
    2. Word Count: In Writing, writing less than 150/250 words attracts a penalty.
    3. Handwriting: Ensure it is legible. If the examiner can't read it, they won't mark it.
    4. Practice: English proficiency is a skill, not knowledge. It improves only with usage.

    Frequently Asked Questions

IDP vs British Council: Which is better?

They are identical. The test content, difficulty, and marking standards are exactly the same. Choose based on convenient dates/location.

    Computer-delivered vs Paper-based?

    • Computer: Results in 3-5 days. Typing is easier for essay. Good if you have bad handwriting.
    • Paper: Results in 13 days. Better if you like underlining text while reading.

How long is the score valid?

    2 Years.
